Worst Turkey Hunter Ever?Part 1
I can’t honestly say that I am the worst ever. But I’ve got to be pretty close. It’s not that I don’t know how to hunt, I’m just pure bad luck when it comes to turkey season. I have a friend that is fortunate enough to have a few properties he has permission to hunt and he is gracious enough to take others with him for a chance at a gobbler. I had never seriously turkey hunted before so last year I asked him if I could tag along when he wasn’t busy helping others. Fortunately for me, he said yes. Unfortunately for him, we hadn’t yet figured out just how much bad luck I carry with me into the turkey woods.
The week before our hunt, I went out and bought all new camo since I decided to gain an extra 30lbs during the whole Covid pandemic and mine were just a little snug. By “a little” I mean button popping snug if I even had the strength to button them! At this point in time I lived about 2 hours away from him. I got up all excited, early on a Friday morning, and made the drive up.
Everything was just peachy! We talked for a little bit, scouted a few areas that he had seen and heard turkeys in, very promising looking spots. We found a really good area and parked the truck to see if we could any to respond to a call. Then it happened. My bad luck reared it’s ugly head and the skies opened up. It wasn’t a little sprinkle like was called for either. It was raining sideways, thunder, lightning, it was bad and definitely not ideal hunting weather. We waited it out a couple hours but it was just non stop. We decided to call it a day so I headed home to day drink.
Well, about an hour later I get a text message from him. “Hey man, 30 minutes after you left, the clouds broke up and it is beautiful now”. That’s when it should have hit me, that I’m just bad luck. But no, it didn’t hit me then and because I’m hard headed, it took a few more trips for me to finally realize, maybe turkey hunting isn’t for me.
